What’s Love Got To Do With It?

Really, it’s merely a four letter word. Alright, so ‘all words have meaning and a definition’ you say? Why then is this word often misused, abused and misunderstood? Love, by my small Macquarie Dictionary 2009 – 1. A passionate affection for another person, 2. A feeling of warm personal attachment, 4. Tennis; nothing no score. With the exception of number 4 here I would like to touch on the former two definitions.

Can a mother or father justify beating (not smacking within a disciplinary role) their child because they came home after dark and let their dinner go cold by telling them they did this because they love them and fear their chances of being hurt or getting lost after dark are at an increase? No, in my opinion no, this is done out of fear not love.

When a woman comes home from a girls night out and wakes the next morning to her husband screaming and shouting obscenities and forbidding her to venture out again with her girlfriends thinking she might meet another man and commit adultery, threatening to take her credit cards away and her identification and the keys to the car does he do this because he loves her or because of his own insecurities? Does his wife agree and abide by his wishes because she feels the same way or does she do this because of some kind of fear? Fear of confrontation or what may happen if she did again? Is the glass half empty or half full?

It’s nice (another 4 letter word, hmmm) to think that love is what makes the world go around but to be true to the saying it really is gravity and orbit that play a role there. Metaphorically speaking what makes the world go around, I would say, is communication. I rarely use the word love, maybe in jest ‘I love Bloody Marys’ I suppose I do have ‘a passionate affection’ for them and they do give me ‘a warm personal attachment’ to them of sorts. I love a good I coffee too.

I much prefer to express my admiration and fondness for someone or something through actions.

I have packed a total of 9 boxes so far and it doesn’t feel like I am even close to ¼ of the way through my shit! Despite putting things in bags to give away to my friends and throwing crap out that is useless. My next move after this will hopefully be a permanent one!
